How to post photo without it becoming blurry

I've tried posting some photos in the monthly photo contest. So i've resized them to the max allowed by contest rules, they look fine when i resize them
but when I upload them to the photo contest, i preview the post and the pic(s) are now very soft/blurry. Suggestions?
Thanx.
Also, then it says on here max size 900 x 1400...pixels? Inches?

Could you post an example here? What service are you using to host the image?

900 x 1400 would be pixel dimensions.

Inches?
You think a 900x1400 inch image would fit on anybody's screen? Any online image size is in pixels.

Can you link to the photo in question ?

When looking at pictures on the web/computer, the only thing of relevance is the pixel dimensions. Physical size in say inches is only relevant when printing. For example a 1440x1440 pixel image at 100 ppi (pixels per inch) would have a physical size of 14.4x 14.4 inches when printed. The same image at 300 ppi would be 4.8 x 4.8 inches when printed. But both images would be identical when viewed on a computer.

Easily. If the image was resampled at 1 ppi

Examples

Here are two images as examples.

The first is 1600x1600 pixels. The ppi is 300 although this irrelevant for the web.

The second is also 1600x1600 pixels but resampled to 1 ppi. if printed it would be 1600x1600 inches (and would look rubbish), but demonstarates that physical size plays no part in viewing an image on a computer.

ps...the website here has resized the images to display at 900x 900 pixels. This is quite common, but you should get my drift anyway.

Well we can only see the image on this website. Can you link to another website where the image looks ok ? or post a dropbox link so we can download the image itself and compare?

ps... how does the image compare when viewed in your Mac photo editor compared to say just opening the image on your computer as an image ? I am thinking there may be a colour calibration mismatch occuring ? Is your editing app using correct colour management settings, and is your computer screen colour calibrated ?

The forum software downsizes images for display. If you are using Firefox you can right-click on the image and pick "View Image" from the context menu. This will allow you to view the image full sized as uploaded (or served by the image host, some downsize the image when you upload it).

If you keep the image resolution and filesize within the limits posted in the attachment window, it won't be modified at all. That's the best way to go IMO. Just look at the filesize that's displayed after uploading. It should be the same as what's shown on your computer.

Note that the images may be scaled to fit your screen, but those settings are per-user and configurable in the user CP.

Thanks for your replies. I will research your suggestions tomorrow morning and let you know how I make out.
More snow due here in northern New England tomorrow night. Spring should be coming soon?

We’re getting snowplow inches again tomorrow night. Rush hour will be charning Monday. We’ve had enough snow and rain in the Midwest this winter that we’ll have significant spring flooding this year - and if we have a wet spring possibly historic flooding again. 1993 level flooding.

Here's the latest.
The forum guidelines say it must be no larger than 1400 width / 900 height, and no larger than 1.00 MB.
My orig pic starts at 4929 x 3264 and 7.2 MB. So...when I downsize it to the 1400 x 900 allowable size, it drops the MB size down to 527 KB
and at that point the pic becomes wicked soft/blurry, even before I upload it to here. Guessng that's part of the issue?
Also, I uploaded a "original", not-adjusted pic to here that wassharp and it still arrived 'here' very soft.

Im guessing that's part of the problem?
When you downsized it to 1400x900 (and 527KB) on your computer, are you happy with the appearance before you uploaded it?

If yes, the likely culprit is it being resized even further by your browser.

If no, then you might want to take a look at the software you're using for doing the resizing and the compression settings you're using.
