Turn camera on with lens cap in place?

I could not find the answer to this in the operating manual...can I turn the camera on with a lense on the camera and the lens cap on, or will this mess up the lens?

Turning on the camera with a lens cap in place does not cause any problems.

It's similar to using a camera in a very dark room.

Why not? Just remember to remove the cap before taking any pictures

Usually not a problem with SLRs.

I remember my dad saying that a couple of the benefits of his Yashica SLR was that you knew if you left on the lens cap on or if your finger was in front of the lens

The black viewfinder will remind you of what you had forgotten to do

You misunderstood: I'm not criticizing, I speak from my own experience and I'm pretty certain that anyone that's ever held an SLR would not pass judgement on leaving the lens cap on. It was worse with manual viewfinder cameras, one could shoot a whole roll before realizing the lens cap was still on.

No problem, it goes both ways. It's difficult to tell exactly the demeanor of what's written compared to seeing in person.

I was going to say, who hasn't done that at least once if not at least 10 times. I find it happens most often when I am in a rush to capture a shot only to miss it because I forgot to take the lens cap off (or I am stupidly trying to figure out why the viewfinder is dark). It's right up there with forgetting to turn the camera on or forgetting the card is out of the camera because I was downloading the photos off of it.

For me it has gotten worse; some of it age, some is because I am a parent of a toddler and get distracted about as often as I want to catch the moment said toddler does something cute or silly.

Thankfully, the cameras are forgiving and don't fully punish you for stupidity beyond that doh moment.
