70-200 AF issue

Hi everyone,

My 70-200 has stopped AF all of a sudden on both med K-1 II and my old K-5. Is it bad?
Thank you

Regards
Hamid

It is bad if you are upset. Do other lenses focus normally?

Yes they do. I have been through all settings and tried to find something "I" hopefully have done wrong I think I have to do without it for a while. Anyways... thank you for your answer Medex.

Hamid

Have you checked the switches on the lens itself?

Its a long shot, but, the SDM contacts are intact? I saw one guy who bought a new D-FA* 50mm that had the contacts of his lens broken.

And what you mean by "pepperberry farm? I'm not northamerican (nor english native) and was just curious about what that means.

Thanks for your input. I have double checked the contacts and they seem to be ok.

"Pepperberry farm" is the name of a person here, who has sent his/her suggestion

@garywakeling:

The switches on the lens are correct positioned. I am afferaid there must be something wrong with the machinery inside

You were right anyways about SDM contacts. I think I had checked the contacts in frustration and just overlooked them I took a look at it early in the morning with fresh eyes and then I saw the problem. The one contact was bent away, in the wrong direction... somehow I don't understand HOW it happens!

I gently bent it back in place and it works now even though it is still not perfectly in place!

Thank you every one very much anyway.

Happy to know it was "just" this. But my opinion is this is one design flaw. As I noted, it has happened with a brand new D-FA* 50mm (can't find the original post). And also with my 16-50 (broke the 2 contacts altogether), although this one is 7yrs old and hacked to screwdrive, so no problem doing AF.

I'm keeping eye on this 70-200 lens, cos I planning to buy it someday, but here in my country we have none pentax servicing for newer lenses, so reliabillity is a concern.

Glad to know, failures are really unlikelly with those now.

edit: I was thinking...maybe one could put a very little drop of superglue BELOW the contacts, to fix it in place and diminish the odds of then to bend over again...should it work?

That's an interesting photograph you shared here. We see some scratch / wear on the mount. This kind of wear happens when attempting to mount connect the lens mount to camera mount with the red dots not well aligned. When the dots are well aligned first, then pressing in and turning the bayonet does not wear mount/contacts.

I am afraid it has happened from time to time. I have been in a rush and was not cautious But I think I have learned the lesson And thank you very much for the good explanation.
