I rather like the more full body shot and background you took, Terry- it tells the story better of the occasion, a visit from your fine young son. Unfortunately, his rather terse expression is obviously caused by the hot weather. It tells that story too! Perhaps putting an ice-filled drink in his hand might have eased the situation. Yes, exposing for the background, holding exposure then recomposing for your shot, and then a bit of fill-flash would have balanced everything better. Otherwise, as others have done, opening up shadows in post process can be quite effective for a shot like this, as well as getting rid of the table edge.

He appears to be in reasonably good focus and sharp enough, but always do focus on an eye before recomposing for the shot. A few times doing such will make you pretty quick at it so you don't lose the moment's expression- in this case maybe worth losing! But even that does show the story of the hot weather experienced on that occasion.
