Hood Question for Pentax SMC FA 50mm f/1.7

Hi everyone,

This is my 1st post because I have very limited experience and I am most grateful for everyone else's knowledge.

I just bought a used Pentax SMC FA 50mm f/1.7 from ebay (haven't received it yet) and one of the hoods that was recommended for it was the PH-SA49. One online reviewer said it didn't fit, but I wanted to hear from the users on this site. The PH-RA49 I believe is a rubber hood and the RH-RC49 is a little pricey for me right now.

Any input on this would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

you could just buy a generic screw-in hood from eBay/Amazon/B&H....

Thanks for that quick answer pepperberry farm. I wasn't sure if the generic ones would fit ok, but their prices fit my pocketbook

I have a generic 49mm screw in hood that’s 20mm deep and made out of metal that I use on my F 50 1.7. It cost me ten bucks including a lens cap that clips into the hood. Works like a charm.

Thank you so much alpheios. I found just the combination on ebay and ordered it. That should give me some peace of mind, since I'm trying not to use protective filters at this time.

If you are using it on an APS-C camera get a generic 'telephoto' screw in hood.

JJC makes a copy that's cheap of the plastic hood.

Also I think...
PH=Plastic Hood
RH=Rubber Hood

If that's the hood I have it is rectangular and won't go on backwards.

PH=Plastic Hood

And S = Square while R = Round (PH-S49 | PH-R49). The round plastic hood screws on, and there is also a metal screw on hood specified for the M50/1.4 = RH-R49 (probably the same as the metal hoods for m42 Takumar lenses, but it had a catalog number in the M lens era)

The naming convention above is fairly consistent across all the Pentax plastic hoods, with the variant being the thread diameter.

Just adding to the "use a 5€ metal screw-in cap" crowd. The bonus is that it will increase the filter size to 52mm so if you already have those filters you can use them over the hood (or the 49mm ones before you screw the hood in, it 100% won't vignette at all on APS-C).

Just so you know about it, the site adapterrings.com is a good source for filters, lens hoods, step up/down rings and a variety of small accessories. They are very inexpensive.

The metal hood/cap combination I ordered off of ebay worked perfectly. I was able to get it for $5.71. Thank you and everyone for your help!
