Make sure you unzip the firmware download and place the single file xxx.bin in the root directory of a clean formatted SD card.
That's exactly what I did, Peter.

Thank you all for the great help from very knowledgeable members. I've done everything, and my KP still wants me to format the card instead of download the firmware. I'll just get back to this latter. My DA 21 comes today, so I'll try it out with the firmware that's in there. Thank you all.

Try a different card Terry.

Only other thing I can suggest is to extract the zip file by right clicking and not by double clicking

I doubt these days it makes any difference, but it used to in certain circumstances. Worth a try.

I'll start from scratch with a different card, tomorrow. My back pain medicine has kicked in, and wiped me out for the day. Thank you for all of your help, Peter.

Did you copy the file over using a USB cable, or directly onto the card?

If it was the latter, be sure to "eject" the card safely before removing it. If you don't, this could explain why the camera wants you to format the card. In other words, the issue isn't related in any way to the fact that you're trying to upgrade the firmware. That's a separate thing to potentially troubleshoot.

I would recommend that you check out this video, which provides step-by-step guidelines for the entire process:

Peter,
I tried a new card, this morning. Did everything the same. Loaded the card in my KP, and it worked! I would have never thought of that. Thank you very much.

Strange things can happen to SD cards. I have one with data on it which I can read but I cannot delete the data or format the card. No idea why.

Card locked (physically)?
Seems too easy though...

No I spent a long time working on this. Files look like they have been deleted but next time I look they are still there. It started when I used some partioning software on it. Lesson learned.

Make sure after you format the card, that you do not place the actual zip folder on the card, but just the bin file as has been explained. As has also been said, make sure the switch on the sd card is not set to "lock".
