SMC PENTAX-A 1:4.0-5.6 35-80mm ZOOM LENS

I've just put a bid on the above with the intention of using it on my K110D DSLR - will it be OK? I'm very much a beginner and would appreciate help. Cheers.

In a nutshell

There are several series of Pentax K-mount lenses; the ones currently being produced include the DA (digital), DA L (cheap digital kit), D FA (full-frame, digital optimized), and FA (full-frame) series. While all Pentax K-mount lenses ever produced are compatible with all current Pentax DSLRs (in some cases with restrictions in that not all exposure modes of the camera are supported by old lenses), there are significant differences between each lens series and each has different features. Furthermore some of the newer lenses do not work with older cameras. We'll be exploring the differences between the various K-mount series lenses in this article. Read more about specific K-mount lens/camera compatibility here.

The DLSR designation below encompasses the mirror-less K-01.

Pentax Lens Compatibility Chart

Pentax bayonet lenses labeled "SMC Pentax" are referred to as "K" lenses in the table below. Other Pentax bayonet lenses have the lens designation as a part of their name as in "SMC Pentax-FA".
Note that "star" lenses work like their "non-star" counterparts unless they are singled out in the table below. So for compatibility of a DA* lens, look under DA lenses, etc.
Exceptions:
FA and F "soft" lenses behave like M lenses in terms of metering.

It will work, but it won't be particularly wide (52-120mm FF equivalent). It is not an autofocus lens if you need that.

Come on now, dont confuse the poster. It will be as wide as any other 35-80mm lens he looks at.

He may never have even looked through a FF viewfinder, how is equivalence even helpful ?

From his welcome post...

Hi all, I've had a an old ME super in my cupboard for years gathering dust whilst I used a small pocket digital but always hankered for a digital SLR as I just loved the action of the old ME. I'm just a simple point and shoot type of bloke but decided to treat myself to a used K110D off Ebay the other day as I read it could use all my old lenses from the the ME.

When you get it, you'll want to put the aperture ring on its A setting. That allows the camera to set the aperture, so it'll show aperture values in the viewfinder and other displays. All the modes will work. If the camera's AF/MF switch is on AF, the camera will have its autofocus sensor active, and lock the shutter until it decides something in the center of the viewfinder is in focus. If that's annoying, switch to MF and the camera doesn't care what's in focus when you press the shutter. The camera normally has a few focus points (I think 5?) but only uses the center point with this type of lens. The K110D doesn't have Shake Reduction so you can skip any advice you see about setting the focal length.

I used an f 35-135 for years. The 35-80 range will give you normal to short telephoto on a crop camera. Also get a hood. The biggest gripe I had was softness wide open and flare since there wasn't a dedicated hood.
