Unable to view PEF DNG from KP

Not sure if this is right area to be posting this.

Using windows 8.1 I could view my raw files from my K5IIs with the default photo gallery. I would use this to view/delete files before I moved them to editing with DXO software. For some reason the raw files from my KP are not viewable in any of the default programs on windows. Any idea's?

Somewhere along the line of computer upgrades, I lost the ability to preview PEF files. DNG files have been viewable with Windows 10 for me.

Recent builds of windows 10 will support, but you have to download a raw file pack (Raw Image Extension) from the Microsoft store. Mine started working after installing this, but then I switched the camera to use DNG format which worked with or without. So for the files shot as PEF or DNG both work. Must have windows 10 1903 or newer (released May 2019). More into here:. Microsoft releases Raw Image Extension to get raw image previews on Windows 10: Digital Photography Review

Ok so I will have to think about upgrading to windows 10 or maybe just change up how I do things. Thanks for the help.

Is there any reason to use the PEF version of ‘raw’? I used the DNG variety from the moment my camera arrived, and my computer correctly read them.

Now, to answer your question. Reading a file type requires a file - I believe it is called a ‘codice’ - from the manufacturer. When my Q-7 arrived, it came with a CD that apparently contained that file, which was apparently loaded into my computer with all the other stuff on the CD. I didn’t run any CD when my KP came just about a year ago - I could still use the stuff from my Q-7. Did your KP come with a CD? Then run it; otherwise go and see what the computer manufacturer has.

I am using Windows 10 but I also ran into a problem with some raw files. The "Digital Camera Utility" that came with the camera can read the raw files but failing that I went the root of downloading and running "Adobe Bridge" it is aFREE option!

Cheers!

I think 8.1 is the problem. Are you shooting PEF or DNG?

I tried both. I just thought it was odd that DNG and PEF both work fine with K5IIs but not KP. I will try the fastone viewer and adobe bridge(others?) My computer is kinda slow and it takes some of the editing software a while to load, which is why I would do the intial culling of the images in photo gallery.

I will check for updates from HP. I am good about doing windows updates but had not really thought about the computer manufacturer.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

I probably really need a newer computer with more horsepower!

You could try (re)installing the Windows 8.1 Raw pack. It only goes up to the K-30 and K-5 but might recognize the KP. Not likely but you never know until you try.

The Windows 10 Extension uses the LibRaw.org libraries which is an open source project so support of PEF is unlikely to go away anytime soon. Support for the KP was added Aug. 2017.

You can try the FastPictureViewer codec pack free for 15 days ($9.95 for full license). Supports PEF, last update Apr 2017 (same as when Adobe added KP support). Will show thumbnails and open in Microsoft photo.

+2 for FastStone; despite other programs I have, this is the one I use 99% of the time.

Or just upgrade to Windows 10 while it is still free.
