But I find them indispensable when using my Raynox closeup filter (similar to the OP's Canon closeup filter) on Pentax lenses with 49mm filter rings.
I also use one with a Nikon slide copier for the same reason.

That's exactly how I see it and for what I use step-rings.
The TO wants to use it for the Canon D500 which is a simple closeup.
The Canon D250 or D240 close-up lenses are different, they are achromatic and of fantastic quality.
Some of the best achromats and the D240 can be found for cheap money. They exist as 52 and 58mm close-ups
But for the 55-300 PLM the D500 or D480 might be the better solution because less close-up
but the A135 will work better with the D240/250
