Proper way to use the Pentax 1.4 teleconverter?

Hello,
I have the DA 300 f/4 lens. I use it for birds in my yard. I wanted a little more reach, so I purchased the 1.4 teleconverter. My question is, what’s the proper way to use it? Do I mount it to the lens first, or the camera first, then the lens? Thank you very much.

I don't think it matters. It is suggested you connect the foot of the lens to any tripod you might use rather than connecting to the camera.

if hand held, I attach the teleconverter to the lens and then the entire combination to the camera body

but that is just me

and yes, if I use a tripod, I agree, attach the lens to the tripod and then the camera body to the lens

but make sure you have a grip on the tripod while doing so

I've done everything, pretended the TC was part of the camera and changed lenses with the camera on, put the TC on the camera first, put the TC on the lens first. The only thing you have to avoid is having the lens mount on the camera supporting the full weight of the lens. The lens is over the weight the mount is designed to support and could flex or break the mount. The TC will aggravate this situation by extending the weight of the lens out further from the camera.

I've done both. Shooting the moon I've attached it to the lens and mounted it then when changing lenses, I've left the convertor in place and swapped lenses. (Even when using a footed lens).

The documentation that comes with the TC has a 'How to Set Up' section, which reads...
'1. Attach the Rear Converter to the mount of the lens you want to combine.
2. Attach the lens connected with the Rear Converter to your camera body'

...although it would seem from posts by others here that it matters not one wit how it is done.

Cheers,
Terry

I believe the correct method is to have the teleconverter between the camera and the lens, rather than the lens between the camera and teleconverter, or camera between teleconverter and lens for that matter...

... sorry
