SMC Pentax-DA L 18-50mm F4-5.6 DC WR RE focus problem

Hi all,

I am having a problem with my 'SMC Pentax-DA L 18-50mm F4-5.6 DC WR RE' kit lens where when I half press the shutter button to focus, it zooms in and then reverses back to where it was previously. Similarly when i zoom in it automatically focuses back, and when i zoom out it automatically focuses forward on it's own. I am kind of baffled as to why it's doing this. It won't settle on a focus that lets me take a photo. My other lenses are fine. Lisa on Instagram: ?Just trying to work out what's wrong with my lens.?.

Thanks for any help you guys may be able to give.

Lisa

As a first step with any lens problem, clean the contacts on the lens and camera with a bit of alcohol on an ear bud.

Ok, checked the back button function and it acts the same. I did a cleaning of the contacts too.

does this happen when you are using the lens to shoot anything or just a specific composition?

Just another stupid question - feel free to eyeroll - are you focusing on something really close to the lens? The minimum focus distance is listed as 30cm, about a foot. My theory is that the camera could react to something too close by trying other focal lengths. But I have no experience with this lens.

It does this whatever the focus setting, near and far.

Yeah, if I set it to a wide auto focus it reacts the same as when I do a center spot focus. Whatever I try to shoot. I guess it's good that this isn't a regular lens for me.

I'm afraid I don't have any answers to the problem, but found this thread and video that seems to show the same issue (with no solution given):

And other threads concerning the K-S2 and the DA 18-50:

I was actually referring to the subject distance, not the focus set up - I.E. a photo of a tree, as opposed to a photo of a flower.

Ok, so I have a little more on this problem. I had my dad try this defective lens on his pentax camera and he had the same problems. Seems it will focus on the 18mm (widest) setting but not on the others. I am wondering if it's worth sending it in for repair, or just replace it?
