Pentax CS-205 cable release not working

I have the Pentax CS-205 cable release (see attached pic) but it has a problem.

It will focus the lens but when I press all the way down it does not release the shutter.

I can see that it has two tiny screws on it so it there a battery inside? Might that be the problem?

A wired release should not have a battery as it is a simple contact switch(es). The contacts may be bent or dirty so you might try inspecting the contacts by opening the case.

Check to that the plug is clean and presses in completely to the socket first.

Edit: from the above post I would inspect the cable where it goes into the strain relief collars for evidence of crimping or twisting. Usually shows as a crease or a whitish area where the sheath has stretched.

In an earlier post here someone was puzzled about the fact that you have to push twice, once for focusing and the second to release the shutter. Try the two steps movement.
