Slight change of topic, but still in the same general area. Checking through lenses from my days with an MX, found what I recall as being a very useful Vivitar 28-200 zoom, which could possibly be useable on the K30. But it won't fit. The reason is that the ?shield? by the aperture activating lever occupies a much greater proportion of the circumference than do the similar part on all my other K-mount lenses. Anyone know why this is, or what function it serves?
Couple of pictures of the mount end of this lens and a "normal" one for comparison.

This is not a P/K-A Lens but a PK-A R P/K = Ricoh.
This lens has often the dangerous version* of the Ricoh-Pin, so you are lucky it doesn't fit, otherwise you might not get it off anymore.

*there are Ricoh-pins which are not problematic

Thanks for the warning. It worked well on the MX and Program A that I used for years, so maybe someone out there will want it.

Out of interest, what is the danger?

The dreaded pin, which was used for some auto exposure thing on Ricoh film bodies, is in exactly the same spot as the Pentax autofocus screw drive. The lens pin hangs up on the screw drive on the body and it's game over. The lens will not come off! Not easily, anyway...

In Ricoh's defense, that pin predated the AF era by quite a few years. Any blame should be probably be ascribed to Pentax.

You can remove this pin:
Tutorial: Ricoh-Pin removal - PentaxForums.com

But again: This thread doesn't belong into the K30/50 specific forum but one asks such questions here:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/58-troubleshooting-beginner-help/

More members read this particular thread because Pentax DSLR Specific Forums are just that: specific for the mentioned
Pentax bodies.

it might be worth the time to read this article which about the " evolution " of Pentax's K mount and clearly includes description of two problems with certain third party mounts for Pentax K cameras:

QuoteQuote:

the infamous "Ricoh pin".
Where Pentax created the "KA" mount in order to support Program and Tv exposure automation, Ricoh had to create their own variant, which has a protruding pin placed in a somewhat unfortunate location, namely in the exact spot where Pentax years later placed the autofocus drive shaft. Such a Ricoh lens will get stuck when mounted on a Pentax autofocus body - the Ricoh pin will get lodged in the drive shaft and prevent the lens from being removed without deployment of finesse, patience and tools.

The other trap is the shield that protects the aperture stop down lever.
The image to the left shows what the shield should look like and does look like on a genuine Pentax lens. Some older third party lenses have a much larger shield which prevents mounting the lens on a Pentax DSLR. Current third party lenses (Sigma, Tamron, Rokinon, etc.) have correctly shaped shields (or no shields) and pose no problem. . . .

Thanks for the enlightenment and the slapped wrist for daring not to know of all the relevant protocols.

I used to have one of the Sigma 28-300 lenses, exactly the same as yours and it worked fine with the K100D, K 20D, K 5D and K 3II. It had to be set to "A" as already mentioned and the aperture controlled on the camera bodies. I sold it on ebay, mentioning that as the definition was not on a par with modern lenses, it would be unfair to expect large blow ups, but the buyer wanted a cheap lens and was going to print photo album size pictures, he was delighted with it. The 55-300 Pentax is a logical successor with noticeable better performance, and the kit 18-55 is better at the wide end.
