Weird bokeh

Ignore the hilariously out of focus/badly composed deer... what's up with this bokeh? I get that you can use weird aperture shapes to get different bokeh but I have like a cross in my out of focus bits!

[edit] sorry I just realised this was with my Nikon D300 with 500mm F4/P so feel free to shame me. I haven't shot it in ages and assumed my digital pics were using my K1 with the same lens+adaptor!

I've never seen anything like it! almost like you shot the deer in front of a green screen and then added a weird background. Are you sure it was a Nikon, I've read that only Pentax can miss focus!

The cross pattern in the bokeh is most likely from a fence or netting behind the deer or even possibly in the foreground close to the lens.

There are all kinds of special bokeh shapes that you can also intentionally create.

It's a manual focus lens and I assure you, I'm quite qualified at missing focus

Ah! I was shooting through a fence. Thank you!

Ah yes. The fence would explain it.

Some more weird bokeh from a Takumar 35mm f/2.3:

I have often wondered what happened but I have no idea.

It almost looks like double exposure

Slightly less weird, also from the aforementioned Tak:

If you stop down to f/5.6, the old timer starts behaving like a normal (modern) lens.
