"Provided no card is in the reader one of the listed disk should say "No Media""

Set it to read only before inserting the card. Yes, that works.

That is a complicated solution rather than just sliding the lock switch on the SD card (or the micro SD card adapter). The KISS principle is far better.

Take the SD card out of the camera, slide the switch, insert into the card reader. Done. Works for all OS's not just Windows. Providing, that you have a card reader that supports the lock switch, if not buy a better card reader. Sometimes spending a bit more money saves in the long run.
