In the course of messing about I discovered that selecting LV Liveview the images come out correct.
I actually reset factory defaults on the K50 in case it was some obscure setting, but it hasn't helped

It is the solenoid and you check as described here:

Liveview does work for a time, but if you check EXIF-Data, you might notice that they don't match:
This is because in LV-Mode the camera has to measure with f4,0 but when the solenoid is stuck, aperture is full closed.
But because the solenoid actuates twice it often opens the 2.nd time and then enough light for the photo taken.
But the camera metered with f22 or f32, depending which AF-lens was used!
