Thanks all, the eyecup I purchased solved the issue.

It does, however, push my eye back somewhat preventing me from viewing the entire frame - kinda have to move around a bit to see the entire frame. I find it an acceptable tradeoff.

I just finished my first roll of film - will see if any other issues arise.

I still don't see why you think the normal and expected behavior is an issue, but if the eyecup solves it for you that is a good thing. Enjoy your K1000!

P.S. Remember to keep a lens cap on when not taking pictures to avoid wearing down your batteries.
