Focus ring jammed on a SMC Pentax A* 300 mm f/2.8

Hi all,
The focus ring on the lens is completely stuck. Initially I noticed a kind of screeching while rotating the ring and then it jammed completely. Before that, I had no issue at all, the focus ring was extremely smooth.
Before trying to service the lens, have any of you experienced this kind of issue and have a fix? The lens is extremely expensive and I donít want of course damaging it.
Thanks for your help.

It sounds like something may have got behind the focus ring, but it could be deeper in too. With that lens I think I would take it or send it somewhere, too valuable for a DIY.

The lens has an internal focus mechanism, I suspect something broke inside in the connection between the ring and the mobile lens group of the IF. Looking at the ring design, I donít see how a particle could have reached the inner side.
Looks bad.
I sent a request to Ricoh Europe and to my professional camera shop. I hope this lens can still be serviced.

I had a similar situation about 6 years ago with my Pentax A* 600 where the focus ring had all of a sudden gotten hard to turn. I took it to a repair shop in Indy recommended by another forum member who lives there. There wasn't anything wrong with it other than it needed cleaned and lubricated. It has worked fine ever since.

It was CameraRepairs.com but I just went to their site and they have closed for business due to a death in the family. It doesn't indicate whether or not they will be reopening.

Thanks,
I send two requests to Nikken and pm2s. The probable issue is whether they would find replacement parts if a component needs a replacement.
Will see, at the moment I feel somewhat discouraged...

Just wondering, does the focus collar have a manual lock knob on it, or some kind of focus limiting setting? I noticed there is a "focus preset collar" on this lens, has it been twisted to a position that completely locks up the collar???

I know that on my FA*600/f4 the focus limiter is a bit tricky, and if you try to set it when not at infinity it can freeze up the focus collar .

Hi,
Yes there is a preset screw, but it is loose and was loose when the ring jammed.

You might try Kamerazeit in Germany, I dont know if he speaks french/dutch, but english should work. He is authorized and may give a hint whether spare parts are still available.

Thanks,
I will certainly contact them. I got a first answer from pm2S: they declined.

There's always the company in Japan run by retired Pentax engineers
Lens Repair Co. run by Retired Pentax Engineers - PentaxForums.com

They will either have the parts or sounds like the will fabricate them.

Return shipping may be a problem as many of the Japanese shipping companies are not shipping to some countries due to COVID-19.

Hi,
I got the answer form Kamerazeit in Germany: they are not able to service the lens because the replacement parts are no longer available. I suspect Nikken will decline for the same reason.

Hi, thanks for the link to the Japanese Pentax engineers. Very interesting, besides the Covid issue I think the other will be the language
I will try to contact them, hoping that they have at least a basic understanding of English.

Too bad but I suspected there are no parts anymore. The Japan repair site looks like a good idea. Shipping back to Europe should work at the moment, I bought some stuff via ebay over there.

Staff at Tekunos can handle English language.

The more likely problem is whether (if at all), will get a reply from them.

I filled up the online query form around 4-5 weeks ago cuz wanted to check with them about general maintenance of an old Pentax AF lens.
But nothing till now. No sound, nothing.

Hi, may I ask you how did you fill the query form? You used google translate or you are used to read japanese?
