With a 6MP sensor, you are forced to look for a longer focal length. With a larger sensor (I'd recommend at least 15MP) you can crop significantly with your current lens and achieve the equivalent of >300mm.
Some examples on the most affordable end:
K20D or K7=15MP
K5, K5ii, K30, K50, K500=16MP
I also noticed a Pentax 55-300mm F/4-5.8 SMC DA ED on KEH in excellent condition for $130.
9 out 10 times, I'd recommend upgrading the lens. In your case, I'd recommend the camera. If you can live without shooting birds, then enjoy your current gear.
