interesting thing happened to my K 10d on the way to the zoo

I had to brake suddenly and my K 10D with grip and the FA 31 Limited went sliding off the passenger seat

[ I know I was dumb to put it there, so no comments about my bad decision please ]

into the foot well

all seems fine except when I twist the off/on/depth of field preview lever to the depth of field point

the shutter triggers

see pg 171 of the manual

http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/man-pdf/k10d.pdf

any thoughts ?

Something moved inside the switch/button mechanism.
Perhaps you can disassemble enough to reset, or even just moving it back and forth a few more times may allow some out of place piece or spring to slip back?

If the shutter triggers it looks like the setting of the preview is set to digital. Are you sure that in the settings menu it is not set to 2? In 2 it makes a picture to control the settings on the lcd, the picture cannot be saved. Hope this helps.

What!?! You didn't have the seat belt attached to the camera strap??? Good thing the Pentax police didn't pull you over! The K10D is a gem; I hope you get things sorted out.

I do often have my camera on the passenger seat, though normally in a case.

I did once break hard and it ended up in the footwell. I was not too concerned as I was checking the rearview mirror to see if I was about to get hit by 40kg of Labrador.

I bet you didn't know dogs could give you a filthy look.

Hope the 10d is ok.

Thread hijack alert

Please don't travel with a pet in the car unless the pet is secured !!!!

this protects not only your pet but you and others you may " encounter "

personally our Japanese Chin travels in a pet crate and our German Shepard travels in its larger crate

a loose pet can interfere with the driver or be injured in a deceleration event

[ years ago in Iowa, I had a " black ice " encounter and ended up putting a Ford Explorer into the ditch, turning it over one and a half times,

wife, young son in a winged travel seat and I survived with little injury, and the Chocolate lab in its travel crate had no injuries either ]

hijack alert ends

It's probably an easy fix once you get to the switch. That means taking off the bottom plate, then the back, then the top plate. I've seen a few K10D disassembly guides. There are a lot of screws of different sizes so keep track of that. The rear plate has connections to the LCD and controls so don't break those. I wait for a day when I feel pretty good and have time to get it all done.

If it is the switch, possibly some of those levers are bent.
Easy to fix. Follow instructions of how to disassemble the K5 (pretty similar) and then you have access to the inside of the top (see step 10):
Tutorial: Repair E-Dials Pentax K7 / K5 / K5II / K3 and possibly others - PentaxForums.com

This part with those 3 parallel fingers is the same as in an *ist-D/DS/DL2 (samsungs as well), K100/110/200D, Km, Kr and most others.
As far as I remember just different on the K-S1!

I think you should check what AfterPentax Mark II points out, see page 169 on the manual. This seems to be the issue and the camera is working as it should.
