Sitting here looking at the price of a K3 III.
For that mony I can get an used Tamron 150-600mm Generation 2 and a used Nikon D500.
My bird-fellows out there with that gear impresses me. More keepers.
Sad that Tamron do not deliver that lens for Pentax.
I'll keep my K1 and K3 anyway. Otherwise I use the Da* 300mm with Da 1.4x and/or 1.7x autofocus extender. When I get a hit - that combo is sharper than "Bigma" Sigma 150-500mm. (sold that one)

Wo thank you all. It is great to hear your sharing.

I have to say it is a bit confusing for me as this will be a big purchase.

At the beginning, i was impressed by advertising in mirrorless camera tracking system.
But then some say the dslr tracking actually work the same in high end camera.

I see that camera does not matter... But i have to say sometimes, i wish i have the af a bit faster to get a moment right. Or just more frame per second.

About the k3iii, it is a bit over budget as i plan to stay under £1k for used body. But it is manageable of i keep the old 150-500 sigma lens.

Uhm, shouls i upgrade lens or camera body? I also hear that the sigma 60-600 is not available in Pentax 📸😭
I don't know about outside the USA, but here for the price of a new K-3 III you could get a used NIkon D500 + 200-500 or Tamron/Sigma 150-600. One of those combinations might be your best value proposition.

With sales tax etc we are near 2300$ in Sweden.
I can get a used 150-600mm gen 2 and a D500 used for that mony here.
Here people seems to sell off - looking at all the ads.
What's happening? Buying mirrorless? Seems to be an Eldorado for used eqv. just now.

you are already set! the K-70 & 150-500 will do the trick!!! most battles are proper exposure for the bird the back ground can trick you & the camera quite easily......the other is getting muscle memory and experience tracking birds in flight.......a better AF system would nice and helpful but good tracking also leads to good shots with the proper exposure......my kit is the K3ii & sigma 150-500os.....believe the k-70 came out after the k-3ii so reckon it has a lil better tech in it...........also the nikon options presented here are very appealing if you are insistent on purchasing something

If you go the K-3 III route, it will give you performance improvement with the Sigma 150-500. Then at a later time if you have the desired budget, you may want to look at the Pentax 150-450 as a lens prospect if it is needed. Also, it will give you high performance with other lenses for Pentax.

Hey, K3 III plus 150-450mm equals] around 2000$ plus 2000$ that is over 4000$ plus all arounds.

OP seems to have another budget.

I did put mony aside for the K3 III - however that was more than for a K1.
I wanted as OP a entusiast birdie lens as well.
I bougt a Tamron 150-600mm gen. 2 and a Nikon D500 for less. than the K3 III. My first non-pentax since 1974.
No K3 III, however I have the K1 and K3 with a load of lenses. They are as well as when they arived.
For the fun of it I also have a Lumix lx10/15 in the pocket and a Nikon Coollpix P950.
Printer is Epson SC P800.

I have to agree. Even i love using pentax in the last 10 years, the price of the k3iii is hard for me to move that way.

Well, i am sure the da* 300 mm is great.

It is a bit confusing for me to pick a system. Thank you all for sharing

I see. I feel like i want to buy something not because i need it but more or less as i was advertised the mirrorless sysfem af system and feel a bit outdated with the dslr.

Well, but it may worth to try around. I feel like i close my mind with pentax for so long

If you are seriously considering buying an upgrade over your K-70 and 150-500mm, you might think about going for the soon to arrive K-5 III, especially if you'd care to do some burst shooting with AF tracking. The new camera's AF is reported to be a significant improvement. I agree APS-C is better suited for telephoto work for most users, so the money for a K-1 II would better be put for the K-3 III. It will perform even better with regards to low light/ISO than your K-70 as well.

But I would say keep your K-70 also, as it provides the articulating screen for times when that is useful, and for more casual use.

the mirrorless is superior in focusing and frames per sec for sure.....reckon i looked at it that you basically have a kit to do the work and do it decently.......but having funds at yer disposal there are certainly options available with better tech.....the nikon one is appealing to me because of the 600mm but tend to stick with pentax because of all the k mount bodies i have and the already invested flash equipment......so fer me it's difficult to switch for one thing whereas a myriad is already well covered

For BIF the K1 works very well. I set the AF point to auto and use the 9 central focus points

The lens here is the DA 560 , which I accept will blow the budget.

Well, if we're going to talk BIF, I find the K-3 II is OK for that...

Consider the DA 300. Seriously, it's not as convenient as a zoom - for sure. But IQ and usability are extraordinary. Plus, it's not heavy like a long zoom.

Center-favored autofocus is a help, but most of the time I'm in center point. The new K3III seems really good for the center favored multipoint, I hope to get some BIF chances soon. Plus, it's getting into warbler season so we'll see how it works telling bird from branch and leaf.

As for switching brands, be careful to compare apples to apples. I know there's a rare duck on the water when I see the Canon and Nikon guys with their $10,000 rigs show up. I'm carting around a K3 series with DA300, I don't need a tripod. But for those big sniper lenses they really do - and their results show their gear and experience.

Yes, DSLR tracking can compete with mirrorless cameras.
K-3 III offers the most secure DSLR system of all brands.

I found the PZ-1 ok for BiF as well

I don’t think the issue is equipment but technique

K300/4 and 1.7x AF adaptor
