Already seconded, but I'll throw my vote in for refund as well. Something really not right with this lens.
Yeah, it's going back. Thanks for the input, everyone! What a shame... the only thing I can figure (wanting to believe the best of the seller) is that USPS tossed it around too hard in transit.

In case anyone is in the market for a DA 35 2.4, Amazon has a few of them on hand for $127 (though, their stock is one fewer than they had earlier tonight).

So, here's an interesting wrinkle in the story. The lens works fine on my friend's K5, but not on my K20D or K100. Any thoughts?

Is your firmware up to date on those cameras?

It is on the K20, not on the K100, and unsure about my friend's K5.

On your K20D and your K100D, are you able to use other auto focus lenses ?

Yep, all of my other lenses (a DA* 55mm 1.4, the kit lens from the K100, and three Sigma DG's) work perfectly on those cameras. I have a brand new DA 35mm set to be delivered from Amazon today, so I'll be able to try it out to see if the problem is with this copy of the lens, or a problem with the older bodies.

I feel bad about the ebay transaction, though, since the seller has already refunded my money and told me not to bother returning the lens since it seems to be broken. I'd like to figure out how to make it work on the older bodies (if possible), return the Amazon lens, and give the money back to the seller. Otherwise, my plan is to try to sell the lens to someone with a newer body (especially if I can do it local and verify that the lens works on the body) and give the money to the seller.

Update: The new DA 35mm ltd from Amazon works as expected on all three camera bodies, which leads me to believe that the problem is with the particular copy of the lens that I bought secondhand. I'd still like to sort this out to help the seller, so any advice or thoughts are welcome!

The 35mm LTD? I thought you bought another 35mm F2.4 from Amazon. So it's not the same lens. Anyway, you should keep the new lens instead of returning it.

It looks like your used lens is indeed broken. Don't feel too bad. One year ago, I did a 2-hour ride to get a DA 16-45 "mint". It was like brand new from the outside, but when I put it on my K-S2, I got the F-- message. I could not even zoom past 30mm. When the lens was shaken, it was clear something was loose inside. The woman offered me to buy it at half price, I refused, since I do not have the skills nor tools.

The seller did put the broken lens back for sale at the original price, though. Among with 512MB memory card and SD-to-micro SD adapter for 10 euros each. No wonder nothing sold.

Sorry... braindead moment. I did get a new DA 35mm 2.4, not a ltd. I think I'll be keeping the new lens, but if at all possible, I'd like to help the seller out. He's been really understanding and accommodating. I'm really confused as to why the lens would work on the K5, but not the K20.

Don't worry: If your new DA35 works well but the old one didn't it had some problem which the seller might not have noticed and yet, it was there.
But maybe he did notice, to pretend to understand is a quite common "feature".

The fact that the seller reimbursed you and do not even want the lens back can be a hint that he knew there might be a problem with it. Besides, an used DA 35 F2.4 should not cost much, so in any case, this is not a big financial loss for the seller. If it had been another lens like the 11-18 or the 150-450, things probably would have been different.
