Burst rate with my KP and a DA*60-250 vs A* 300 f/2.8

Hello,
Some weeks ago I was birding with the two below configurations:
KP in AFC mode, RAW, max burst rate, ISO auto, TAV mode set at f/5,6 & 1/650s, DA* 60-250 + 1.4 converter, autofocus
KP in AFC mode, RAW, max burst rate, ISO auto, TAV mode set at f/5,6 & 1/650s, A* 300 + 1.4 converter, manual focus

In both cases, I did not reach the buffer limit for RAW;
In both cases, AF was on spot (for the A* it is not a choice);
For the DA*, FPS priority was selected

What I noticed: the burst rate with the A* was better, although I did not try measuring it (no means to do that).

Do you think this is possible and what could be the reason? Or is it perhaps only a “feeling” from me that would be dismissed if a rigorous test was done?

Thanks

Manual focus?

The burst rate would be higher because there will be no breaks to re-focus with the 300mm.

How many shots did you take in the longest burst?

If the bursts were long enough you can get a more or less accurate time by looking at the exif time of first and last shot which is measured to the closest second.

Yet here it says you get af shutter lag of 0.089 sec in af and 0.083 in manual.

I believe it is because the camera is a little processor limited. With more things to do between each frame, it takes a little longer to be performed.
Even though you are using FPS priority, the processor has to do AF calculations and send AF commands between each frame. Which puts a little more demand on the processor than if using manual focus.

Unfortunately I did not take sufficient frames in one burst to draw any conclusion from the exifs. I should at least take 7 or 8 frame to do that. I notice that my technique in birding lacks frames, I have the tendency to stop shooting after 3 frames.

You would probably need about 10 bursts of at least 4 secs averaged together before you could get a decent estimate.

You said you're shooting RAW, and I think most (if not all) of the "picture correction settings" (highlight/shadow protection, horizon correction, noise reduction) only apply when shooting JPG, but I'm not sure about AA filter simulator... isn't a JPG with the chosen settings being embedded in the RAW file, though? All of those actions take some time, so turning them off might get you closer to the maximum burst rate the camera is capable of?

AA filter simulator is off in the menu. Actually, even in JPG, most of the correction options are off. The setting are as follows:
Highlight correction auto
Shadow correction auto
Noise reduction high ISO is on low correction
Shake reduction is on

All other corrections are off. Normally, the RAW setting should ignore the above settings except the SR.
