K3 mark 3 firmware update problem

I have downloaded the firmware for the mark 3 version 1.10 transferred it to a formatted SD card and when I hold the menu button and turn it on it just comes on. I'm using a Mac book pro but had this problem once before with the K1 but it resolve itself after a couple tries. I have downloaded and transferred the file repeatedly and it is still the same any help anyone can give me would be appreciated

What's the name of the file you've placed on the SD card please?
It should be Fwdc233b.bin
And, is it in the root of the SD card, not in a folder?

Don't you have to extract the files and load the extracted files to the sd card?

A few easily done errors include:

Is the SD card in slot 2? (The card must be in Slot 1)

Did you download the firmware more than once and use a copy that the Mac added a number to? (The unzipped file of a K-3 III must be called "fwdc233b.bin")

Did you put the firmware file in the DCIM folder? (The firmware file must be in the root directory meaning it is listed with the DCIM folder)

Good luck!

Yes, extract and copy the fwdc233b.bin to the root directory of the SD card.

If you happened to have an older "bin" file in the folder, the system will add a number to your file, like Fwdc233b 2.bin, which won't work, so make sure old ones are deleted or out of the folder.

thank you ramseybuckeye that solved the problem. I hadn't deleted the folder in downloads from the first update and it was confusing the thing for lack of a better term. thanks everyone for the assistance. much appreciated

Ok, so I had the same problem... BUT with a different cause that others might be running into!

There's an error on the 'Pentax K-3 III Firmware Update v1.10 Released' page!

The error is caused by an old link in a link called 'from this page'! See below:

Pentax K-3 III firmware update instructions:

  1. Download the firmware ZIP file from this page
The 'from this page link takes you to the *wrong* Pentax page - the page you're taken to is for downloading an update for the K-3 II - NOT for the K-3 III!
From my own experience I can say that when you attempt to update a K-3 III with a K-3 II update the camera just ignores the update and starts up normally without asking to apply the update.

For the record, the K-3 II update is called fwdc230b.bin. If you see that one, you're using the wrong link - assuming you're trying to update a K-3 III

As others have noted, the correct update is called fwdc233b.bin. That's the one you want if you're updating a K-3 III!

Make sure you use the link on the line: 'Download the K-3 III firmware from the official Pentax firmware site.'

Well spotted! I presume you're referring to this article: Pentax K-3 III Firmware Update v1.10 Released - Firmware Updates | PentaxForums.com

I'm happy to report that the links have been fixed.

Hi, I had the same problem as the OP.
I had reformatted the card too. Would not work.
Finally I switched too a newer card and everything worked just fine.
