I'd agree on looking for the older versions if you're going to go all-manual. I use an FA-100 in the field and the lens switch for manual/automatic focus is very convenient.
I shoot f/16 regularly and f/20 occasionally.
If you're not using the autofocus you can get the same optics as a manual lens.

Stop it down, use a flash and you can severely underexpose the background.
