What setting did this? (weird shadow, K-70, 18-135mm WR kit lens)

I usually shoot RAW, but I'm still learning the ins and outs of the K-70 (having a tougher go at that than going from the K-30 to the K-3!). I was taking some random shots of my boys, and apparently kicked the camera into JPG only mode by mistake, and this happened. Photos were in succession, so no settings were changed between them.

What caused it, and what do I need to tweak to avoid it in the future? Is it something with the shadow corrections?

To the best of my knowledge, there is no setting or combination of settings that might result in the difference between the two frames. OOF gnat near the camera?

The photo before these two showed the same weird over-shadowed bit (only this time it was by his ear). Its like the camera went "I *like* this shadow, I'm keeping it!".

As I said, I usually shoot RAW because JPGs are JPGs and I love to tweak, but its also something I'd rather not have to fix in post.

This was the first shot in the sequence - it shows around his ear here.

I was going to suggest an artifact of the accelerator… but that kicks later I thought based on photos to photos data (starts between 500 and 630 iso)

A shadow from the scene, perhaps?

Not sure what it would have been from, save maybe myself. Most of the light was backlighting, save for the overhead fluorescents, and those generally just cause banding if I remember right.

Shot this one a bit later from further away, but thats where he'd been sitting the entire time.

Dust moving across the sensor or in front of it somewhere.

Thats a possibility! I'll have to check to see if I have any dust bunnies inhabiting the camera already.

Not the scene per se, but something partially blocking the light for that side of his face. The second version appears to be a gingerbread man.

...and what was over your left shoulder when you were closer?

Looks like dust on the sensor to me. If it isn't actually stuck to the sensor, it could move around.

It's probably a bit of lint wandering around in the light path in the mirror box.
Lock the mirror up and see if you can spot it in front the shutter, if you can't them open the shutter and see if you can spot it in front of the sensor. I've had it happen where a bit of lint gets caught in the shutter frame and shows smudges similar to that.
