What's port in hood for

Recently purchased a HD DA 55-300mm ED WR on the lens hood there is a small port that one can take off/out and it leaves a hole in the hood. What it is for, just seems a strange place to put a hole.

So you can spin a polarizing filter or variable density filter.

It is also very useful for losing a small piece of plastic that is almost impossible to replace.

… and inducing horrendous amounts of flare if you've just reduced your variable ND to a point where you can't see through the viewfinder and you forget to re-fit it
