This info is good, but the current CD name is S-SW177 for DCU v5.9.2
Rather than all the bother of USB drives etc., just temporarily rename (re-label) your hard drive as S-SW177 and run the downloaded exe from there. Re-label the drive when you're finished … job done !

Sorry I should have been more clear. PEF's do not load at all so I'm going to use DNG's only. I have just gotten the latest firmware version loaded and hope it goes better. Lightroom crashed repeatedly . Thanks for the info. I will be going out this weekend as I will have more time. Good info thanks all even if I did screw up the question.

My camera is used from MPB so no CD
Adobe makes a DNG converter to convert any camera raw into DNG. I used this when Corel PSP did not keep up with camera releases.

Any of the labels eligible for updating listed on the download page under "Objective CD-ROM" will work - e.g. S-SW140, S-SW150, S-SW151, S-SW156, S-SW160, S-SW162, S-SW168, S-SW167, S-SW171.

Earlier versions looked only at removable drives for the label. Including fixed drives in the search makes it much simpler especially if this works on Macs as well. Thanks for the tip.

I have DxO 4 which I never gave a chance and at the moment ON1 2022 has opened the test files I tried this morning. I'll run a few through Dxo and see if I can get comfortable with it. I'm not going to reload Adobe for a while if ever.

I've been using ON1 Photo Raw for awhile, although I haven't upgraded from 2021 to 2022. It handles both PEF and DNG files just fine. However, ON1 uses a LensFun file to apply automatic lens corrections (done at your option, of course). The names of the lenses in the database files must exactly match those in a photo's EXIF. Because there can be a slight difference in EXIF names between PEF and DNG/JPEG files, I discovered that I need 2 entries for each F-series lens. PEF files require “f/#” for the aperture while DNG and JPEG files require “F#”. Fortunately, a user can easily edit the lensdb file with a text editor. I had to add an additional entries for my F-50mm/1.7, F-28mm/2.8, and a Tamron SP AF 90mm/2.8 (172E). I don't want to clog up this thread with a lot of details that most people will find extraneous, but I'd be happy to supply additional information if requested.

Try FastStone Image viewer, Irfanview or XnView - all free. DNG is more of a universally recognised format than PEF.

I have FastStone but ON1 is doing a good job of opening everything except PEF's so for the moment I'm good. Thanks

DXO is camera specific. I can’t open PEF from my k100D and K100d super if I recall correctly. I don’t recall using PEF since then.

I think what is being suggested is that you save files as DNG not PEF.

DCU5 is very awkward to use. ON1 is my current program of choice, and is easy and powerful. Both DNG and PEF seem to work fine.

I went to the Pentax website and downloaded the utility but it was looking for a previous version and Canned the install. I guess I will by a CD and go that route.
You will not need the utility if you have Photoshop Elements, Pentax DNG files will open in PSE so should not be a problem.

Most of us us use DNG now because it is almost universally recognized, unlike PEF.

I have it sorted out now. Lightroom is working as it should. It was a bad card reader. I have a dual slot card reader for my XQD cards and SD cards .The XQD side still works but the SD reader went on the fritz. A lot of work and worry for a $9 card reader that fixed everything.
