D-LI109 battery on D-BC90 charger

bonjour!
suppose you're travelling with 2 cameras, one taking D-li90 batteries the other one D-li109 batteries.
While checking voltages and specs of their dedicated chargers D-BC90 & D-BC109, well, i realised i can theoretically charge D-li109 batteries on the D-BC90 charger, which means i can travel with one charger only for both batteries and cameras.
I found d-li109 charging very well on D-BC90.
Any thoughts?

Well, they both output 8.4V at 400mA so no problems there. D-LI109 seems to squeeze onto the D-BC90 well enough as well - though vice versa is not possible.

The only difference that may matter is the D-BC109 has a fourth "D" contact that the D-BC90 does not - I'm not sure exactly what it does, but as I understand it third party chargers don't have it either, so I guess it's probably not going to go up in flames.

Interesting observation, I never would have thought to try this and could be useful in a pinch!

But how do you get the battery to stay put? the D-LI109 has some sort of hooks to keep the battery in place, the D-BC90 does not provide those.

Since the contacts are different, I just carry both types with me when traveling. And sometimes I find myself charging both types of batteries simultaneously. I've not tried the fitting, but the slots to accommodate the batteries into each charger look to be of different sizes. But if one works for both, taking just one could save a bit of space. Fortunately, the FF K-1 and K-1II use the same battery as do the flagship APS-C bodies, so both are served with the same charger and thus the batteries are interchangeable.

I'm surprised that Pentax hasn't developed a convertible charger, it would sure save them money. But then aren't they going to in camera charging now?

Well, this is where the magic happens, if you push the Dli109 in the DBC90 charger with just a little punch it fits perfectly.
I finished charging 2 Dli109s they seem in perfectly good shape. And the green dot appears on charge then stops when charge is done.

I'll post an update after 3 complete cycles with Dli109s on the same Dbc90 charger , just to see if the combo stands in time.

If the output specifications are the same then maybe it is ok.

I thought the extra contact had something to do with charge/overcharge/heat detection. Which is why some of the 3rd party batteries don't last as long.

It is 100% o.k. just that you don't have the 4th contact on the D-BC90 which the D-BC109 has. The new charger has those 4 contacts because of a law in Japan,
but it works without any risk!

I have done it many times when once in holidays having a K5IIs and a K-S1 with me and I forgot the D-BC109.

Hi to Tiflis:
Don't use any multichargers nor 3-rd party chargers.
