Yeah, it's returnable but only for cash (not in stock anymore), I got a good deal on it
No, you did not, you got a faulty item and the best way to go is to return it.

I fully agree!
But he cannot just exchange it against the same product, only money back.

He has warranty and can make us of that, depending what the tests will deliver, i.e.

is it the lens or the camera

Where are you located? I’m in the Dublin area.
I'm in West San Jose. I planned to visit Sunol Wilderness while it's green to get some landscapes, so will be nearby. Will PM you, thanks for reaching out!

A very strange fault because there should be focus-confirmation if the DA18-135 is used manually.
Is there any other manual lens available?
But the test must include another lens with DC-Motor:
DA 20-40ltd
DA or DA-L 18-50
DA 16-85
DA* 11-18

but possibly all SDM or HSM lenses as well.

The problem is rare but known:
DA 18-135 mm lens won't focus - PentaxForums.com
18-135 refuses to focus - PentaxForums.com
18-135mm autofocus only works in liveview - PentaxForums.com
Thank you for linking these topics, will dig into that, maybe there are similarities.
I will just try the DC lens on the other camera, and if it works, that would mean I got faulty body.

That makes me think of one wildcard suggestion for the OP. Try updating/reinstalling the firmware in the camera. (Could it be some glitch that stops the camera driving a DC AF lens even though it will drive a screw-driven AF lens?)

Clutching at straws here though. It does sound like a problem with the lens.
That's worth trying, thanks! Will report back soon.

Status update on my issue:
I finally found another Pentax camera and lens for testing. And the problem was in my lens. So I'm keeping the camera and sending the lens for repair.

Want to thank everybody who tried to help!
Cheers!
