My inclination at the moment is to forget flash photography with this camera. Flash photography shouldn't be this difficult

I use flash all the time with the K1, both mounted on the hotshoe and multiple flashes off-camera controlled by radio transmitter on the hotshoe. It works every time.

Put the Metz flash on the hotshoe. Set the camera to Manual exposure. select a shutter speed below sync speed 1/180s, and a medium aperture set by the camera dial (lens must have aperture ring set to A). Do some test shots and post the results.

ps. how far from the subject are you when you get overexposed images ?
