DFA 24-70 questions

Hi,
Today my K-1 started to produce continuous beep sound (electronic) when I focused. This sound stayed on until I switched the camera off. The24-70 was on. I tried a different lens- works fine.
I suspect it’s the motor. Is there a way to fix it? Is the lens done?
Thank you very much

Can you recreate it? It might be worth taking a phone video of it and posting to flickr or somewhere to share to help us diagnose it.

Do you have the camera set to AF-S or AF-C? What about MF and manually focusing the lens- do you get the normal focus confirmation?

Hi,
Yes, I can reproduce it consistently
I don’t know what video to shoot. I just made a recording of the sound.
The sequence of events:
1. Turn the camera on
2. Push the shutter button half way- sound starts and stays on
3. Turn camera off - sound stops

The same happens when I use AF button to focus
Please let me know if you have any questions
Now I’ll try to attach the audio file

Sorry - couldn’t upload the file
Will try to make a video and attach it tomorrow

Thanks

Sure only happening with one lens (D FA 24-70)? Which lenses did you test?

Hi,
At the moment I have only DA 40. So, I can’t be sure it’s only 24-70
Thank you

That’s useful to add to the picture. Do you live somewhere that you might be able to meet other Pentax users and try a lens? Or have them try your lens? Or is a service center an option?

Mikesbike,
Sorry missed your post
The camera is in AF-C. Switched to AF-S - same issue.
When switched to MF it confirms focus
Thanks

The first implication is, if the camera works normally with your DA 40mm lens, that the issue is probably with your DFA 24-70mm lens. But, since with the DA 40mm the AF works through the old standard screw-driven type operation, while the DFA 24-70mm has its own version of SDM motor for AF, testing between the two lenses carries a difference of its own. If I recall correctly with this particular lens, it is made by Tamron. That being the case, reliability of this SDM motor has been far less prone to failure in general compared to the older Pentax DA SDM motors. Failure of those lens motors simply meant AF stopped working altogether, without any noise issue. Even so, any motor can possibly develop problems. The best way to test would be to do so against another lens having its own motor, therefore working through the same contacts on your camera for AF, it would seem. Hopefully, the lenses you will have available for testing will have their own AF motors instead of the screw-driven variety.

Check and clean particular the KAF2 contacts (vii) on the lens and on your K-1.
On the lens those contacts sometimes can bend.

Does the lens focus at all during those beeps?
If it does focus the ultrasonic SDM Motor should be fine.
If not, it is either a contact problem or the motor itself.

As this is a very expensive special lens, worth to get it repaired then.

Hi,
The lens doesn’t focus.
I did clean the contacts on both camera and lens.
As for repair, where should I call?
Thanks,

Hi,
Just checked with FA77 and DFA 70-200. These work fine.
I guess it's the 24-70. Will be trying to find out about repair.

Just found who does repair for Pentax. It's Precision Camera. Their estimate is about $620. Any suggestions: repair or a new lens?
Thanks all for help.

But what can you do?

Given that’s an estimate… what’s the replacement cost of a used unit without the problem?
