On the matter of the F*300/4.5 versus the FA*300/4.5, it’s worth noting that the optical formulae are identical, and the major differences are the size, weight, hood and tripod foot. The F*300 is larger in overall diameter because of the built-in sliding hood, which is one reason I chose it over the FA*300. The other reasons are the detachable tripod foot and that it’s actually lighter (1025g with the foot, versus 1067g for the FA* with the hood but without a foot).
As for the language discussion, speaking as someone with an ancestor who crossed the Channel (Le Manche) with William the Bastard, I always appreciate a good bit of banter about the origins of English, the best about which you could say is that it’s something of a mongrel, not unlike William himself.
