Purple "sidebar" in raws(PEF)

Hi!
I have just gotten myself a Pentax KF as my first camera. I have not done any photography before.

I've been looking around on how to use raw files and landed (for now) on rawtherapee (5.9). Here is where I have my problem. When I open up the raws (PEF) in RT the photos gets a purple "sidebar", see picture

I have been franticly been trying to find an answer on google about how to remove this, but I can't find anything helpful (though I am pretty sure I am just asking the wrong questions).

---------- Post added 11-20-23 at 01:48 PM ----------

And I see now that I've written PEX instead of PEF everywhere...

I had a similar experience with the K-3 III when it came out. The explanation then was that the sensor size is slightly larger than the area my camera used, hence a frame with odd colors around the actual picture.

Since my RAW software couldn’t interpret the exif information correctly it showed the whole raw content. The fix was to add the camera information to the software when this update became available. After that the frame was gone.

With KF being quite new you might have the same effect.

I'd agree with Snafu711.

I just checked the size of a K-3 (original model) DNG as reported by Rawdigger software: 6028x4024, compared to RawTherapee: 6020x4016, and the jpg file of the same frame: 6016x4000 (which is the claimed resolution of the K-3 in its manual).

There are certainly some extra pixels around the edge of the sensors, and it appears that some of the programs aren't quite sure what to do about them! At least in astronomy CCD sensors, these extra pixels are used to determine dark levels and biases in the readout electronics.

When I poked around with PEF format when I first got my K-3iii I noticed the same thing. I usually just select DNG as the raw format but wanted to see if there might be some benefit to PEF. After seeing what you see I just went back to using DNG. I also use RawTherapee and have for years as it does a better job supporting a lot more features than most other raw tools. With pentax cameras the PixelShift support is fantastic and add in the new features like spot corrections and local edits with the more unique features (wavelets anyone) and it is a really good tool once learned.

Hi again everyone! Sorry for throwing this out there and then going MIA!
Thanks for the welcome!

Does it show up in JPEG output? Yep, sadly! (which is a bit irritating since I have a boat load of pictures in PEF).
Does it happen to DNG files? Not that I can see

As for the sensor format in RawTherapee, when might this be updated? Did it take a long while?

I forget the opensource library used by RawTherapee but it is used by a lot of other opensource projects as well but it might be worthwhile to reach out to them and provide some sample raw files. There is probably info on what they need to add support for decoding the PEF file correctly. I would imagine it might be the PEF file and an associated "un cooked" jpg straight out of the camera. So no using neat camera features but I could be wrong. Also since pixelshift is a feature there may be a request for a pixel shift PEF and associated jpg. I don't know exactly what they want but these community projects generally will accept help in any form and that would be just a guess as to what would be requested/needed.. A while back I put forth some effort for the lensfun DB to provide shots for some Pentax lenses.
