Pentax K-3 and Phoenix 50mm F1.9 issues

Hello!

I wanted to start using my Phoenix 50mm F1.9 that I got today with my phoenix P1 on my K-3. I put the lens on and it the aperture isn't changing at all.

It changes just fine on the P1, just not sure what's going on here.

I've dug through the forums and I've found a few things. All of my other manual lenses work just fine on my K-3 aperture and all.

Does the lens need to have a metal back? I saw something about needing the back of camera to short to recognize that a lens is attached. I've changed the setting under C4 #27 no success, any suggestions?

Thanks all

The photos of the K-mount I've seen show a black coated mount on the lens. For now try placing a small piece of aluminum foil over the contacts and mount the lens taking care none of the foil falls into the camera. See if this solves the problem. If it does, you'll need to remove some of the coating over where the "data" pin would be.

Note: the K10D doesn't need to make electrical contact like later bodies do for MF lenses.

If the lens is the one in the link above, that does not have an "A" setting on the aperture ring, the camera must be used in M or B or X-sync exposure mode for the aperture to stop down. In any other mode it will default to Av and shoot wide open only.

The foil trick worked!

When scraping off the coating, how much should I expect to take off? Should I be seeing bare metal?

Thanks!

Yeah I was using it in M mode the whole time, but it still wasn't working. Gotta get this coating figured out...

You could try using metal tape. There are various things that would work. An actual aluminum tape is made for HVAC work. There is copper tape used in stained glass work. There are likely some other uses and sources.

Using tape would allow you to avoid scraping the finish off. The amount needed it just enough to allow the pin to short to the mount ring on the camera body

Metal foil tape is a viable alternative as long as it isn't to thick. Arts and crafts, auto supply, hardware stores all have varieties of adhesive foils. It will eventually wear off but just replace as needed.

I did something awfully jank lol, but I think it'll work for now. I honestly just need to get a metal backed 50mm at one point, it's pretty fun to shoot with just screwing around!

I took an soda can and cut it to size by removing the lens mount and shaving it as needed. Looks good and good enough™! Definitely going to keep it on the camera for now.

Thanks for the help!

I prefer removing the paint to bare metal. All other approaches will potentially leave metal slivers that wear offf , or brake off and get into the mirror box. Thicker materials will either put stress on the lens mount and also tilt the plane of focus for the lens slightly.

I had to do the same with my extension tubes for macro.
