Hello All - does anyone have any idea how Pentax (K200D) saves settings and maintains time & date even with main batteries removed. Is there one of those little lithium cells hidden deep inside the camera, will it go flat one day and not be replaceable.

Yep, a battery. I think it's user-replaceable - is it in the bottom of the camera somewhere?

as a side note... this is quite the unusual thread with the poster putting their name in the subject line...

Are you sure?
I had a look at the GX-10 service manual and couldn't find such a part. I may have overlooked it though.

There are types of (flash, EEPROM) memory which don't need a power supply to hold data. I reckon the camera has one of these. I'm pretty sure the firmware is stored in an EEPROM.

No, not sure at all, just going by "the old days". You're over my head with that jargon! I've just ahd a look at my K20D manual and can't see an extra battery compartment anywhere, so chances are you're right.

You oldies didn't ask the question.

Seriously though, I'm not aware of the question being asked before but if the question was going to be asked, it would more than likely be by a newbie. It would become old very quickly if people kept asking it, so that's why I moved it.

Many electronic devices nowadays have power capacitors that would hold a small charge for several days (unless intentionally/unintentionally shorted inside the camera). It doesn't take much power to maintain that sort of data. The clock itself wouldn't work off of NV Flash RAM but static information like menu specific settings could be saved to flash RAM with no problem. It could be a conjunction of the two.

In other words, really, as I have just learned...

I had this problem with my first Dslr, K100. Bought it brand new and out of the box set datetime ect and as soon as you turned it off it would reset itself to default when turned back on. Had to send it back to pentax in Colorado for repair. Nothing said about battery though. Just replaced couple chips and some board in it. Anyhow no problem since.
