Lens Hood question

I just bought a Pentax DA 50-200 lens. It came with a lens hood. I've never used a lens hood before. i notice the hood has a small section on top that can be removed, leaving a gap in the hood.
Can anyone tell me what thats for and when would you use it?
thank you

Turning your polarizing filter. Us the hood.

If you ever put a circular polarizing filter on the lens, having that cutout will allow you to rotate the filter without removing the hood.

Marc

I would recommend always using your lens hood, no matter what the condition, especially if you are a pixel peeper. You may lose contrast and increase your likelyhood for PF and CA w/o it.

A lens hood also helps when you bump the front of the lens into something.
