Help Pentax lenses

Hi,

I have just joined. I live in South Africa and use a K100D and K20D (recently).

I need some advise please. I would like to upgrade my standard kit lense SMC 18-55mm (I now have 2!!) and are considering the following 3 options

1. Pentax-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL (IF)
2. Pentax DA 16-45mm F4
3. Sigma 17-70mm F2.8- 4.5DC Macro (AF)

Budget can just reach the first lens but I am concerned having read certain reviews on this site regarding possible quality issues with certain specific lenses. Are these comments still valid (posted some time ago)

Some comments would be appreciated.

Tobie

First of all. Welcome!

What are you looking for?

Every lens have it's own speciallibility. Looking for durable waterproof get the *-lens. I have the 16-45 (haven't try it out yet). They say it's a good lens and not too expensive.

I would go for pentax anyway.

If you can afford the da* it may be a good choice

look to your needs....not the lens speficication

Thanks guys!! Although more option = more difficult choices.

I would like to go for landscapes, macro and some portraits..... sounds like a bit of everything.

I have a Sigma 170-500, Sigma UC 70-210 1:4-5.6, Pentax F Zoom 28-80 1:3.5-4.5 and the 2 kit lenses SMC Pentax 18-55mm

Hello. I would go for the DA* lens in your case.
It's wide (for landscapes) and razor sharp center (very good portrait).
I also see that you haven't got any wheathersealed lens yet, so this could
be a good choice that you at least have one lens to shoot with even if it
starts to rain when you are outdoor.

It costs more, but it is a good lens.

Wow cool! I have been to south africa and i know the weather sealing could have really helped. The dust gets EVERYWHERE. Of course, it doesnt make a huge amount of difference if you dont mind being careful
On the other hand most of the extra price for that 16-50 is the aperture of f/2.8, and as you live in sunny africa the extra brightness might not be needed. I have heard lots of great things about the 16-45.

If your price range reaches the Pentax 16-50mm f2.8, then I would suggest getting these two lenses instead:

Pentax DA 21mm f3.2 ~350-400 USD
Pentax FA 50mm f1.4 ~150-200 USD

The prices depend on your bargain hunting skills, and whether you buy them used. If you search through Amazon.com or B&H Photo, they are new for ~$400 and ~$200 respectively. For me, I prefer primes for their light weight and superior bokeh. Also, in the case of the FA50, you'll never find a zoom at f2.0 let alone f1.4. But to be honest, more than any other lens, I treasure my FA 35mm f2.0. It costs about 300 USD new. (I got it used for $240). It is very sharp from edge to edge even at wide open. The bokeh is fantastic, and the focal length is right around normal for DSLRs. It is the one lens I love the most, use the most, and couldn't do without. I think, though, that you've probably gathered I'm not a big fan of zoom lenses, so think about that when considering my suggestions. The primes do offer superior image quality though, in my opinion.
