12-bit, 14-bit and 48-bit capture

I've been wondering about this for a while, but most D-SLR's can capture in 8 to (at the top end) 14-bit.

My film scanner (dedicated wonderful Minolta that it is) scans at 48-bit (not interpolated) and generates 16-bit files (TIFFs usually) if i want them.

What gives? How does this work? Is my scanner better than a D-SLR?

Your scanner can't "scan" an image in 1/2000 sec. And computer can do the calculations much faster then the wimpy chip in your camera
Anyways, there 2 different systems. In the old days scanners would do 3 passes, one in each color. 48 bit is 16bits per color.
