Shooting in the snow - while it's snowing?

Just looking for tips on settings for some photo's outside while it's snowing... It's very overcast and grey.... snow everywhere.. and moderate snowfall.

How should I set up my K20D?

Thanks,

Ken

Programmed exposure and a 1/2 stop or so of positive exposure compensation.

Unless you have weather sealed lenses, consider covering your lens with a plastic bag (with a hole for shooting), and make sure you put the camera in a bag before taking it into a warmer place, otherwise you'll get some condensation.

If you do get condensation, remove your lens and dry out both the lens and camera with some heat, but be careful not to get things too hot.

And never use a flash when it's snowing....

The flash lights up every little snowflake as it's passing in front of the lens... very unpleasant (uness of course thats the effect you're looking for)

What I do in that situation is to take a test shot, review the histogram, and then adjust the exposure so that the right end of the histogram is about 1/3 stop from the maximum. This ensures you retain detail in the highlights and makes the snow look "white" instead of gray (assuming this is your intent).

If you do want to try this, it works best if the space between the camera and the subject is relatively sheltered, for this reason. It can occasionally look pretty neat.
