It occurs to me to ask, why don't zoom lenses have air filters

somewhere on the barrel to allow air to enter and exit the lens as it's zoomed? It seems to me that a really big problem is dust getting sucked into the lens (and body) every time a big lens is extended. I was prompted to ask this by the Bigma currently in the Marketplace, it has dust inside and though it may not be bad it most definitely isn't good.

Seems to me that some sort of filtration system for expansion air on the lens would go a long way toward keeping lenses and bodies dust-free.

To much effort, too delicate, probably not that effective, and it'd create friction that would hinder smooth zooming.

What you can do is create a zoom lens that moves internal elements, thus having an airtight lens.
