Buying k200d this spring... will it drop in price (is a new model coming out soon)?

Hello,

I'm planning on buying a Pentax k200d. I've been holding off in case a new model was announced this spring in the hopes of a price drop on the k200d. Was a new model announced? Is it likely there will be a price drop on it, sicne hte k20d had one last month?

Pentax k200d price drop/sucessor?

Hello,

I've posted this same thread in pentax begginers forum. I am not sure where the best place to ask is, hence the cross-posting.

A Pentax K200D is certainly a very good purchase.
You should just be aware of this:
This model now sits in between K-m and K20D. The K200D has slighlty better controls, AF point selection and weather sealing. The K-m is smaller and has an improved AF algorithm. K-m and K200D have the same street price (here in Germany at least).

Knowing this, current wisdom is that the K20D will see a replacement in summer (although not a "direct successor") and the K200D will see a replacement for the Xmas season.

As for the price drop: Both, K200D and K-m (here in Germany) were cheapest when purchased at special discount prices from large retail chains (Saturn). They both (kit prices) run at €299.- ($322.- w/o VAT). German forums had the word spreading which market/city to buy from.

The K200D has *already* seen a huge price drop compared to where it was on its introduction. Based on how things went with previous models, I'd say it's done about all the dropping it's going to. The body is currently selling at $400-$500, which is quite a bit below where it started. I suspect it will continue to sell for $400-ish long after its successor is announced.

I'd say it's all about self-control and how much you need the K200D.
If you really need the K200D immediately, then you won't need to wait.
Since you are asking this query, then I suppose you don't really need the camera that much.
I suggest, just wait and see as most of us are doing.
Now, this is where the self-control comes in..in waiting and trying not to jump the gun in buying..
There will likely be a drop of prices (for sure), if not from the dealers, then the re-sellers or those that are upgrading.

I believe that Pentax announced the new "K200D-class body" will be released around new years of 2010 so thats quite a while to wait. The K200D is a fantastic camera and I'm sure you'll be happier with the pictures you take in the next 9 than with a bit of money saved

Hi all!!!

I am in the same boat! Finally after reading hundreds of reviews, I've decided to buy k200d. This is my first DSLR by the way, after canon P&S camera.

So my question is where to find a good deal? on ebay prices are still high! it's like 620$ for k200d with the first version kit.....

ebay and amazon are usually good. try looking at some online canadian camera stores too (google canada camera store) and usually with the currency exchange rate you can get a pretty good deal. I'm not positive, but I think the k200d has been discontinued already, so any new products are inventory left over.

thank you for the info.
I don't care if it has been discontinued.
If it's a good camera so there is no reason to worry about, anyway I will use it for an year, maybe even longer....

From reading the Pentax rumours threads it seems that it is the K20D that won't have a replacement yet as of the summer whilst the K200D is the one that will have a new replacement..at least that was how I read it.
Anyway, we are all just guessing..

Best deals on Ebay usually come from prodigital2000, whi is actually an authorized Canadian dealer that sells most of their stuff at lower prices than just about anyone else. But since they sell on Ebay rather than through a regular online ordering system, they only sell what they have in stock (or expect to have in stock), so sometimes they won't list a given product at all. My wife and I bought a K200D for her brother last month for $365 (body only). Crazy cheap, but it was an auction, and they were hoping for a bit more. Now they tend to list only as a "buy it now". I see one with kit lens II for $499 right now. Amazon also has it for just over $500.

Yeah, I agree with those who say "don't wait". If you plan on seriously using the camera, the lens mount is not going to change any time soon and the money is in the glass, not really the body at this level. So, I don't think you can go wrong with the K200D, I love mine, it is with me always.

If you want a new one you better get one now because they will be gone from the shelves soon.

Apparently because of the fluctuating yen prices will be going up soon so decide asap.

As for me, I'll decide when the new models are out.
That way, I would have a choice as to get the new model or the K200D itself if it is really what I want.
More choices..more confusion..hehe..but that's just me.
