Help! Lense communication problem "f--" message

when I put the sigma lens 70-300 apo dg macro and turn on the camera I get a "F--" message on the top screen. And I cannot take a picture. Looks like the lense is not communicating with Camera. I cannot figure what is causing this.

Steps I have already taken:
1. Cleaned the Connection (bottom of lenses and camera) with a microfiber cloth.
2. Changed the ring in the lense to "A", and In the Customize menu in the camera I allowed to take pictures on all settings not just "A" mode.
3. also did the apposite to only take pictures if lense is set to "A" mode.
4. I tried changing the rings to all the different f numbers "f/4 to f22".
5. Made sure that when putting the lense that it clicked.
6. took off the battery and put back in.
7. tryed different settings "auto", "manual", "P", "av", "tv" etc.
8 put the auto focus to manual, to af-s, turn camera on/off.

When I put the Pentax lens that came with camera it works fine DA 18-55.

What else should I do? I just bought this lense 2 weeks ago.
Do you think the lense is defective?

Thanks in advance, this is my first post here. I am new to Pentax and DSL photography.

So even with the aperture set to "A" it shows the "F--" display?

yes, it does.

thats what's weird about it. from reading the boards putting it to "A" usually fixes the problem. But I can't get it to work.

There's a reasonable chance the "A" setting on the lens is not functioning correctly. When the lens' aperture ring is moved to the "A" position a pin should protrude from the len (to enter the recess on the camera side.) If there is a misalignment of the lens while mounting (twisted too far or too little), or the pin is stuck, the camera will not know that an "A" type lens is mounted.

I'd look closely to be sure the pin protrudes when moving to the A setting, jiggle the lens when it is mounted, and if that fails, jam a piece of tinfoil into the "A" recess on the camera side so the F -- is replaced with numbers in the -- position.

The first copy of the Sigma 17-35 I bought last year had the same problem. I noticed that if I gently flexed the lens on the camera body it would "connect". Problem was the contact(s) on the lens were not protruding enough to make solid contact with the body contacts. I sent it back for an exchange.

Same problem with my copy once in a while. Happened during a wedding shoot ... booo! I could make it work by flexing the lens around on the mount so I concluded it was a problem with the contacts. I cleaned them the best I could and I have had little trouble since.

I'd get an exchange on the lens.

thanks to all for the help. I guess I have to return the lens. Nothing works. I do not see a "Pin" on the lens like someone said.

Thanks again to all.

This was a documented problem with Sigma lenses a couple of years ago. Send it back and exchange it for a Pentax 50-200. You'll be much happier with it.
