A hood will definitely help. Fortunately hoods are relatively cheap. You might even want to get both a "wide angle" hood and a "normal" hood to see which works best. I actually use a "normal" hood (the rubber screw in kind like this one):
RLH67 Adorama 67mm Rubber Lens Hood
on my Pentax FA 20mm F2.8 and it doesn't vignette, and helps muchly with flare control. Just be sure to get the correct diameter thread.

NaCl(hoods also help protect the lens from accidental bumps and fingerprints and the like)H2O

And to think Photoshop has a filter to create this effect and you want to get rid of it.

you can still get lots of good use out of it, just be aware of light striking the front of the lens.

The ideal position for taking photographs is to have the sun at your back, other positions, as Tim says, you need to take care where the light source is coming from.
