Purchase path?.. what's next?

Hi everyone,

Just starting in world of photography.. I picked up a K200D.

But I am not too happy with the lens. A big part of it is probably my own problem with camera settings, etc. But I think this lens can't really meet all of my needs right now.

I don't intend to carry around a lot of different lens / equipment, as most of the stuff I want to shoot is just whatever I see when I'm on weekend trips around the city / country. So pretty much looking for an everyday lens that can have a reasonable zoom, and can get pictures well both indoors and outdoors.

This lens I'm using right now.. I can't really get a nice depth of field effect at all, I found..

Anyways, suggestions at all would be great. Want to get absolutely under 500, but cheaper is good.. I don't have an unlimited budget at all.

Was considering this, "Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP XR ZL Di LD Aspherical (IF) Lens" and "Tamron 17-50mm F2.8".

Check out the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8.

Or just get a 50mm f/1.4.

Use the lens you have to get a feel for whether you'd miss that 18-28 range more than you'd appreciate the 50-75 range or whether it would be the other way around. You do indeed want an f/2.8 zoom to get the shallow DOF effects you refer to, but be aware that's still not going to be *all* that shallow. If you *really* want shallow DOF, you need a prime - so getting something like the 50mm mentioned above *in addition* to the zoom you already have might make more sense.

Nice lens IF you are lucky enough to get one that focuses. I would consider the Pentax 17-70. I have one and love it. Remember that one of the benefits of using a Pentax camera is the ability to use Pentax lenses.

Yes, but Pentax new lens pricing is insane in Canada. The Pentax 17-70 is $830, and max aperture of f/4 may not be shallow enough DOF for the OP.

I'd highly recommend the Pentax 50mm f/1.4 as it is still a bargain (even at $300 CDN) and has more DOF then you will likely ever need. The fact that it isn't a zoom can be an advantage as well - it limits the perpsective, so you start to consider things like DOF and composition. But then it sucks for general walk around, so keep the kit lens.

I could recommend a number of lenses but I'm afraid that you might still be unhappy. Can you elaborate a bit more about the "depth of field effect" you are after?

As mentioned above, the DA 17-70 is $499 on Amazon right now and would cover the whole range with a constant aperture of 4. If the goal is shallow depth of field, I would favor getting a prime in the range and using that in conjunction, say the DA 35, FA 50 or FA 35 would all work well.
