Camera Question

I've got a question. Someone local to me is advertising a K100 with 7 different lenses for $250. I don't know the K100 at all, but I thought that it was a digital camera, but they've got it listed as a 35mm. I'm going to go have a look at it tomorrow, but want to get a better idea what I'm looking at ahead of time. If it is digital, is it a better camera than my *istD, or just comparable but each has their own pluses / minuses?

Thanks

My money is on K1000 and a missing zero. Seven lenses, maybe M50/2, a 28/2.8, a 135.2.8, a 2x TC, a 70-200 zoom, a 28-70 zoom and a set of closeup filters screwed together that kind of looks like one lens. It should be pretty obvious if it is a film camera. It might be worth $250 if the lenses are good quality and you can use them.

If it is a K100D actual digital SLR, it is a model aimed at a less professional consumer than your *ist D, but since it's a later model, it does some things better. The sensor is the same Sony 6Mp unit, so RAW images are pretty close, though the two cameras might use slightly different filters in front of the sensor - I can't remember for sure. The JPEG processing in-camera for the K100D was supposed to be better than the other 6Mp cameras. The K100D has SR, a huge plus for it. It has a big screen on the back, 2.5" vs. the 1.8" on the *ist D. It uses SD cards like all the Pentax dSLRs except yours.

The viewfinder is pentamirror, not pentaprism like on the *ist D - prism is a little better. The AF motor is supposed to be stronger on the *ist D. The list of pro features on the *ist D is very extensive. It can use TTL flashes, but the K100D can only use P-TTL.

A K100D and 7 lenses is probably a good deal if you can find a need for a 2nd body.

I went and looked at it, and it was a K1000. Lenses were nothing special. Only 2 primes. A 50mm (same one i've got), and a 28mm. There were 3 zooms, but not in great shape, and 2 - 2x converters. Didn't even bother making an offer, as it wasn't even worth anything to me. Oh well maybe next time.

Yep, you're already stocked up on stuff that could be found in a typical boring K1000 setup. But you never know when someone has thrown in an awesome lens in one of those kits. I picked up a Pentax-M 35mm f2 and a Pentax-M 100mm f2.8 in lots like that.
