Landscapes and focusing

Don't laugh, but I've never shot landscapes with DSLR. So I wonder, how do you set focus when shooting a landscape?

I've done all of the above, depending on the effect I want. I've also engaged the DOF preview and focused (manually) based on the whole *range* of subjects I want in focus, as opposed to focusing on one particular subject. But I usually find it most effective choose one subject to be in sharpest focus, and then stop down enough to get DOF where I want it.

I do pretty much as Marc does. To a degree it also depends on what lens I'm using. With the Sigma 15-30, for instance, I know it's going to be sharp all the way, so I more or less leave it to its own devices. With something like an M100 I'll be more fussy about DOF and will focus on one particular object.

Hey, if it's not focused at the hyperfocal distance, then it's not a "landscape shot," by definition. One problem you may encounter is that depending on the weather, you may lose contrast in the background, because of hazy atmosphere. (The following's shot with TC+55-300 .)
