2+GB cards in k100d

Several months ago I went on line to request info on using higher dapacity sd cards in my k100d. I received an e-mail with instructions for making the change but it got lost in the ether before I could try it out. Does anyone have any definitive info on how to modify the camera to accept bigger gb cards?

AFAIK with my *istDS, 2GB still ok if they are normal SD, If they are SDHC the camera won't reconize them

You'll need to update the firmware.

Go to Customer Support - Official PENTAX Imaging Web Site

Select "K100D" from the "Historic Product" menu under "Firmware", and you can download Firmware version 1.02, which allows for the use of SDHC cards. Just follow the directions on the page to do the update, it's very simple.

Always make sure you have a full charge on your battery or use the "DC in".
You wouldn't want your battery to get drained and suddenly hang the upgrade without it loading fully and finished, 'lest you want to end up with an expensive paperweight.
I don't know if this happens if it can be reversed, as with celphones..a firmware update but with the batteries dying on you will give you a "dead unit".
No fears though, so long as you have a full charge on the batteries you are using, then you'll be fine.

+1 on "don`t run out of juice while upgrading', used to be a trip to Pentax if that happened. Do they still support K100D in that regard,?, don`t know.

Cheers. Mike.

You have to update the firmware, but SDHC cards work fine in the *ist DS. I have a Transcend Class 6 8Gb card that says I can take 737 Raw images. Class 6 is overkill for the DS but useful for the next camera. I have firmware version 2.02.

But if you have the K100D super it will use SDHC cards without modification.

Wouldn't it still need the Version 1.02 for "improved support for SDHC memory cards"?

I wonder what version of firmware is installed in the K100D super when it's new?

I'm sure that it was designated as version 1.0. Each camera has its own set of firmware. Even though the K100D Super is almost identical to the K100D, it is still considered a different set of firmware. Version 1.0 for the K100D Super included support for the SDHC cards, from new. It is entirely possible that it is identical to Version 1.02 of the K100D, but we can't know for sure.

I therefore wonder if anybody here upgraded their K100D super's firmware to 1.02 and if they noticed any difference or anything?

I think you would still need to upgrade to firmware 1.02 'coz if you read the firmware version history:

Version 1.01:
Support for SDHC memory cards. (This would be for the K100D)

..but how come:

Version 1.02 says...
Improved support for SDHC memory cards.

..would this say that the first version of SDHC support has a little fault in it or there are quirks..as the version 1.02 says that it has "improved support for SDHC memory cards."

Any thoughts?

I was referring to being able to send in a crashed K100 and have it reloaded with firmware, they probably still do that for older models. I hope.

Cheers. Mike.

Thanks for this info!
I didn't know they can do that!
This is good to hear!
'Coz with celphones, you sadly become an owner of an expensive paperweight if you mess up the firmware update.

I have the K100D but I can't remember the firmware number (I'm at work), but I had to upgrade it to use a 4gb card. Found out the hard way after I bought the card and it couldn't read it. I've had absolutely no problems with the camera since the firmware upgrade. Upgrade took about a minute to do.
