about K200D shutter speed

why the shutter speed could not increase more than 1/180 sec when i have the built in flash on?
i have NiMH rechargable batt in it at he moment and manual lens attached..

That's due to the way the shutter is constructed. 1/180s is the fastest shutter speed possible with the built-in flash because 1/180s is the fastest speed where the shutter is fully open thus exposing the entire sensor when the flash fires.

At higher speeds the shutter is actually a slit that moves across the sensor and the entire sensor is not exposed at any point in time.

With some of the dedicated external Pentax flashes you can go higher (called high speed sync). In this mode the flash will send several bursts while the shutter slit travels across the sensor.
