A nice basic camera but it is already discontinued. Why not try the current Pentax K2000 (K-m)?

I think the discontinued k100d may have a far better price tag than the current model. Money talks!

Yep. The only real "limit" is the small buffer, but in normal use it is not a real problem. The 6 MP sensor takes pretty good high ISO/low-light shots, too.

I think the K100D is a better camera then the K2000 (K-m).

K100D: Selectable focus points, Optical DOF preview, better low light

K-m: More pixels. Newer. faster autofocus.

YMMV

The K100D was my first dSLR too.
Do check out the forum's camera database for people's personal reviews.
It's a solid camera. I've tried out all the Pentax dSLRs either on the job or in the shop and in fact, I'm yet to find a Pentax dSLR that 'sucks'.

As mentioned, my limitation with the K100D was the continuous shooting limit and slow buffer dump speed to SD card. Otherwise it performs really well and has a great sensor with effective shake reduction.

Enjoy!

I'm another pleased user of the K100D. I've been buying name-brand 2-GB cards (primarily SanDisk) at discount locally for approximately $10. I've had good luck with Olympus Camedia Ni-MH 2300 batteries and the Olympus Camedia Ni-MH battery charger BU-100, although I doubt that's still available.
Best wishes.

Are you sure the K-m doesn't have mirror lockup or spot meter? That's the first I've heard of that.

As for low light performance, K-m focuses better by all accounts. I've never used one and can't compare noise levels directly, but I *have* compared with my K200D (same sensor as K-m) against the K100D, and I say it's a draw. Sure, if you blow both images up to 100%, the K100D shows less noise - but tha'ts only because you aren't blowing it up as much (100% is bigger for a 10MP camera than a 6MP camera). Comparing at the same size, the images are close to identical in noise - and the 10MP camera captures more detail, giving you more leeway in deciding how aggressive you want to be with noise reduction.

Some other usability improvements too in the button layout and menu structure.

For me, the decision between these two would basically come down to optical DOF preview, resolution, and price - and the K100d would probably win for me if those were the only two options being considered.

That is exactly why I bought one and with the usable ISO 1600 pix.
6mp is usually enough for one's need if you don't have to crop to much.
Enjoy!

It did not come with the 18-55mm kit lens as your first picture suggests?
You are going to want at least that range if you plan on shooting wide angle photos.
The kit lens is a good one from what I've read.
I personally have the DA 16-45mm. I tried to get a kit lens from a person from Amazon.com, but it was a bad experience on my part; I did not get it.
Long story. Anyway, the K100D is AWESOME! I am using mine more than my K10
D these days cause it is so light and loaded with features. I don't think you will be dissapointed!
